To make good bonsai, you need to have two basic knowledge e.g. the aesthetic principals related to bonsai and visual art, and the horticultural principals (plant physiology and plant morphology).
The aesthetic principals is needed in order to be able to implement the good design principals and the artistic aspecs to your bonsai creation. This includes the programming process in bonsai design.
The horticultural knowledge is needed to make your bonsai like mature trees in nature with the reasonable horticultural clue as close as to the natural phenomena.
In order to do so, you need to understand the plant physiology so you know how a tree is shaped and formed in nature; then the plant morphology is to understand all the natural aspecs that affect the form of a tree in nature.
The reason is because any form of trees in nature always have reason behind how they are formed in nature; and only with the above knowledge, you can make your bonsai looks nature and beautiful in logical manner.
